I get a lot of questions about what it is like to live in a high-rise with a toddler. So, I thought I would write a post answering the most frequently asked questions. Keep in mind this is based on my building and my personal experience here so far. If you have any additional questions feel free to put them in the comments below or direct message me on Instagram.

1. Is it safe?

In my opinion, the building we live in is very safe. All the windows are one inch insulated glass and very sturdy. One of the staff told me they are quadruple pane windows. The smaller windows that open have safety locks that don’t allow them to open more than four inches. This allows fresh air to come in but keeps everyone safe. Also, they are tricky to open so Atlas can’t actually open them himself.

We do have a balcony but we don’t really use it. I keep that door locked and we don’t keep furniture out there.

Additional safety features of the building include; destination elevators, keypad door entries and 24-hour concierge. We always feel safe here.

2. What do you do for fun if you don’t have a backyard?

We use the whole city as our backyard. This is the main reason I started the blog. I think there is a lot of value in taking kids outdoors and showing them new things. We go out almost daily to explore various parks, museums, restaurants and sites around the city.

3. How do you get your groceries upstairs?

I personally get my groceries delivered. Living downtown means parking is not easy and we live on a very steep hill. The Wholefoods near us only has ten tiny spots and the two Target stores don’t have attached garages. If we only need a few items we walk and carry them up. However, if we need a full grocery run it gets delivered to our door. I do miss going to Target but in the long run it actually saves me money since I don’t buy everything I see. The delivery app I use is Instacart.

The other option we have is borrowing a luggage cart to bring up our bags of groceries. The carts are kept in the Valet area and can be used by any of the guest. They are just like the carts used by hotels to take luggage to a room.

4. Do you get stir crazy not having a yard?

No, I think the windows and views help with this. We never really feel closed in because most of our walls are windows. It actually gives us an incredible amount of space. Atlas loves looking out the windows and watching the city lights or the ships come into the bay.

Also, we go out a lot as discussed in question two.

5. Are there activities or spaces for kids in the building?

There aren’t any kid specific spaces in my building. However, there are lounges and movie rooms that Atlas enjoys playing in. One lounge has board games, a large TV and shuffle board. The theater room is also a big hit if I put on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I have seen these spaces used for kid’s parties.

We are also very lucky to have an indoor pool in the building. This is where Atlas loves to play the most. It is heated and isn’t very deep so it is fun to play in year-round.

6. Where does your dog go to the bathroom?
This is my least favorite part about apartment life. The dog has to be walked several times per day which means I have to get Atlas dressed and in the stroller and we take the dog out together. My husband takes him out first thing in the morning and at night when he’s home. But most of the time you will find me juggling baby and dog up and down hill so he can potty. There are dog walkers that come to the building but it gets pretty pricey. I only use them in an emergency.

7. Do you have any problems or complaints about noise?

We have never had any complaints about the amount of noise Atlas makes. He’s a toddler like any other and he runs around the house, throws toys and yells a lot. I actually never hear our neighbors either so there is probably really good insulation. I’ve also been told there are gaps between floors to help limit the noise.

8. Does your son get scared being so high up?
No. I wasn’t sure how he would react but he actually loves the windows. He looks out all the time and we have fun finding things and pointing out what we see. He does the “traffic report” from our office every evening when his dad gets home. They look at the Bay Bridge and pretend they are reporting the traffic situation to all the residents.

Overall, we love living in a high-rise. I think it’s totally doable with kids and has many benefits. Will we live here forever? Probably not, but we are taking advantage of every feature while we are here!

1) Es seguro?

Por lo general lo que las personas quieren decir con esto es : "No tienes miedo de que Atlas se caiga por una ventana?

El edificio en el que vivimos es mu seguro. Hay varias especificaciones sobre las ventanas que me hacen no preocuparme por esto. Todas las ventanas son de vidrio aislante cuádruple de 1pulgada y muy gruesas.. Las ventanas que se abren tienen lazos de seguridad que no les permiten abrir mas de 4 pulgadas. Esto permite que entre aire fresco y que todos estemos seguros. Y también son difíciles de abrir así que Atlas no las puede abrir.

Tenemos balcón pero no lo uso y lo mantengo cerrado con el seguro para niños y no tenemos muebles allí afuera.

Las características de seguridad adicionales del edificio incluyen:ascensores de destino. entradas de la puerta de teclado y conserje las 24 horas. Siempre nos sentimos seguros aquí.

2) Que haces para divertirte si no tienes patio trasero?

Usamos toda la ciudad como nuestro patio trasero. Esta es la razón principal por la que comencé el bog. Creo que hay mucho valor en llevar a los niños e al aire libre y mostrarles cosas nuevas.

Salimos casi diario para explorar varios parques, restaurantes y sitios de la ciudad.

3) Como llevas tus compras hasta arriba?

Yo personalmente pido mi mercado para que me lo traigan hasta el apartamento. Vivir en el centro significa que el estacionamiento no es fácil.

Los supermercados de alimentos integrales que tenemos cerca solo tienen 10 localidades y las dos mas cercanas no tienen garajes adjuntos. Si solo necesitamos algunos artículos, caminamos y los traemos nosotros mismos hasta el apartamento. Pero si necesitamos hacer la compra completa, no la traen hasta nuestra puerta. Extraño ir hasta target o al lugar de destino , pero a la larga ahorro dinero porque no me compro todo lo que veo. La aplicación de entrega que uso se llama Instacart .

4) Te vuelves loca por no tener un patio?

No, yo pienso que las ventanas y los panoramas me ayudan con esto. Nosotros realmente nunca nos sentimos encerrado por que la mayoría de nuestras paredes son ventanas gigantes de vidrio. En realidad nos da una cantidad increíble de espacio. A Atlas le encanta mirar por las ventanas y mirar las luces o los barcos que entran a la bahía. Ademas salimos mucho como lo dijimos en la pregunta numero 2.

5) Hay actividades o sitios para los niños en ese edificio?

No hay espacios específicos para niño en mi edificio. Sin embargo, hay salones y salas de cine en las que Atlas disfruta jugando. Un salon tiene juegos de mesa, una gran televisión y una baraja. la sala de teatro también es un gran éxito sobretodo si pongo a Mickey Mouse en la pantalla.

He visto que usan estos espacios par fiestas infantiles.

También somos muy afortunados de tener una piscina cubierta en el edificio. Aquí es donde a Atlas le encanta jugar mas.

6) Como sacas a tu perro?

Esta es la parte que me gusta menos sobre la vida en un apartamento. El perro tiene que ser caminado varias veces al día, lo que significa que tengo que vestir a Atlas y al coche para llevar juntos al perro a caminar.Mi esposo lo saca a primera hora en la mañana y en la noche cuando esta en casa. Pero la mayoría de las veces me encontraras haciendo malabarismos con bebe y perro arriba y abajo de la colina para que pueda ir al bano. Hay paseadores de perros que viene al edificio, pero se vuelve bastante costoso. Solo los uso en una emergencia.

7) tienes algún problema o queja por el ruido?

Nunca hemos tenido quejas sobre la cantidad de ruido que hace Atlas. Es un niño pequeño como cualquier otro y corre por la casa, arroja juguetes y grita mucho. De hecho, nunca escuche a nuestro vecino, por lo que probablemente haya una buena insulasion. También me han dicho que hay algunos espacios entre la flora para ayudar a limitar el ruido.

8) tu hijo se asusta al estar tan alto?

No, No estaba segura de como reaccionaria, pero en realidad ama las ventanas.

El mira todo el tiempo y nos divertimos encontrando cosas y señalando lo que vemos. El hace el "informe de trafico" desde nuestra oficina todas las noches cuando su papa llega a casa. Miran el puente de la bahía y fingen que están informando la situación del trafico a todos los residentes.

En general nos encanta vivir en esta gran altura. Creo que es totalmente factible con los niños y tiene muchos beneficios. Viviremos aquí para siempre?
